In this policy brief, Gabrielle Wills, identifies six insights into the realities facing young matriculants after school in South Africa.
The available opportunities for youth after completing school have not grown commensurately with improvements in school completion. Even though the matric still provides an advantage over not having one, the brief highlights how youth with a matric were about as likely to get a job in 2024 as they were 8 to 10 years previously without a matric. This policy brief for the Covid-Generation project draws on a larger research compilation by Wills, Selkirk & Kruger (2024) with a version of this policy brief appearing as an op-ed in The Conversation.
