RESEP extends warm congratulations to Tina Fransman, who not only started her PhD at RESEP in 2019 but also won the 2018 Economic Society of SA (Essa) Founders’ Medal for Best Economics Master’s Thesis at a South African university. The thesis investigated multi-dimensional poverty in South Africa between 2001-2016, for which Fransman used a novel methodology, namely a multidimensional poverty index (MPI). The story has been documented on IOL, where more can be read about Tina’s great achievement. Our congratulations also extend to Professor Derek Yu of UWC, a former RESEP colleague, who supervised Fransman’s Master’s thesis and will co-supervise her PhD with Marisa von Fintel and Servaas van der Berg. We wish Tina further success for her research and what will undoubtedly be a bright career.
