About the award:
Research on Socio-Economic Policy (RESEP) is pleased to announce the availability of a bursary to support a currently registered Masters’ student at any South African University. The bursary is aimed at students with an interest in furthering their research into basic education, early childhood development (ECD) or the economics of education.
The motivation for this bursary award centres on a need to develop local research capacity to engage in research into improving systems of education, including using quantitative-evidence to inform our understanding of the problems and solutions to the learning crisis in the developing world, and South Africa in particular.
The bursary-holder will be given the opportunity to engage with established researchers and other stakeholders interested in education. This includes collaborating with RESEP team members and attending capacity-building workshops/conferences on education related issues such as early grade reading, early childhood development or other education-policy topics. Opportunities will be given to the student to collaborate on research projects where this supports the student’s masters’ dissertation research or general academic development.
In shortlisting applicants, preference will be given to students who
- i) have currently commenced or are considering a thesis/dissertation topic related to basic education, early grade reading, early childhood development or the economics of education.
- ii) are interested in quantitative or mixed-methods research approaches.
About RESEP:
RESEP (RESEP.sun.ac.za), based in the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University, focuses on policy-oriented research in education, health, labour and development economics. Our team consists of a cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary group of full-time and part-time researchers or research students at Stellenbosch University. We also collaborate extensively with researchers based in other universities or institutions.
Value of the bursary: R50,000 (for 2019 studies only).
Eligibility: To apply for the bursary, the applicant must:
- A) be an African language speaking South African citizen, and
- B) be registered for full-time or part-time Masters’ study in 2019 at any South African university.
How to apply:
- Application cover letter including a short motivation (max. 600 words) outlining your interest in research on basic education, early learning or the economics of education.
- Curriculum vitae including relevant, contactable references.
- Please identify clearly if you have had any exposure or course experience in quantitative methods (e.g. statistics, econometrics).
- If you have already commenced your Masters’ dissertation or thesis, please identify the name and contact number of your supervisor.
- Evidence of admission for Masters’ study at a South African university.
- Identification documentation (e.g. ID or passport).
- Copies of academic transcripts.
- Please submit evidence of your latest academic output (e.g. your most recent essay, your honours’ dissertation, a research report or an academic paper)
