In 2017, RESEP’s Chris van Wyk was commissioned by UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS), as the lead consultant to develop training materials and methodological tools to be used for capacity building activities. These would be aimed at enabling countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to assess the quality of their education data. For this exercise, he participated in several workshops conducted at the headquarters of UIS in Montreal, where Chris made a substantial contribution to UIS strategies setting out the appropriate steps to implement and improve EMIS systems in developing countries. You can find the wide range of capacity development tools and services under Data quality analysis: Administrative routine data systems, on the UNESCO site, here.
Additionally worth noting, was that this was the first year since 2012 that the Ministry had managed to produce EMIS data in the same year that it was collected. As such, the Hon. Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, was proud of the effort. The minister further expressed appreciation for the work done on producing such publications of excellent quality, which she believes “will assist the Ministry in addressing the challenges faced by the Ministry in order to ensure access to quality education.”
The publications can be accessed on the UNICEF site, here.
