ReSEP member and holder of the South African Research Chair in the Economics of Social Policy, Professor Servaas van der Berg, received recognition for his outstanding research in the annual Stellenbosch University Research Yearbook.
In the interview van der Berg explains that in the policy field one should realise that most of the recommendations will never be implemented. What drives van der Berg and ReSEP is the will to “stimulate debate locally and influence policy positively.” For someone studying the social policy in South Africa it is “the most wonderful social laboratory in the world,” but he adds that “as someone who has to live with it one sometimes has one’s reservations:”
“You know that in the end the country will get through these and other contortions. The question is actually how many years it will take and how much time will be lost in the process.”
