The Research on Socio-Economic Policy (ReSEP) group, with financial support from UNICEF South Africa, is presenting a Course on Education Indicators for the Department of Basic Education (DBE) from 22 – 25 October 2012 as part of a series on Data Analysis. The course is aimed at increasing awareness of the use and limitations of education indicators amongst personnel from both the DBE and provincial education departments, and also at increasing the awareness of education system performance amongst participants.
The course takes the form of a series of lectures, presented by experts from the University of Stellenbosch and elsewhere. These lectures will be interspersed with some simple Excel-based work with education data, not so much to focus on the Excel-skills, but rather to assist participants to discover some aspects of system performance for themselves and to consider possible policy responses. This Excel-based work will also be made available in the form of short videos of how to implement this with the simple datasets that will be provided in the course. These videos can be accessed on the ReSEP website from the “Analysis of education performance indicators in Microsoft Excel” screencast series page and interested researchers are encouraged to make use of this facility.
