Derek Yu Wins Founders’ Medal for Ph.D. Thesis

Former ReSEP member, Derek Yu, was awarded this year’s ESSA Founders’ Medal for his doctor’s degree thesis on using household surveys for deriving labour market, poverty and inequality trends in South Africa. The medal is awarded annually by the Economic Society of South Africa for a thesis that “contributes significantly to and provide evidence of original economic research.”

During his stretch at ReSEP, Yu’s research included work on youth unemployment, the comparability and reliability of poverty estimates across households, youths in South African labour after Apartheid, trends on hours worked, and a review of measuring informal employment in South Africa. Yu is currently a lecturer at the University of the Western Cape.

Another Stellenbosch University student, Jeanne Cilliers, received the Founders Medal for her master’s thesis on the marriage patterns in the Cape Colony.
