Janeli has been a researcher at Department of Economics in the research unit, Research on Socio-Economic Policy (ReSEP) since 2013. Currently completing her PhD in Economics, her research is focussed on understanding the complexities of the South African education crisis and on the improvement of national policy around this issue.

More specifically, her focus has been on the pivotal role that early childhood development plays in future learning and the national education policies that supports children in this critical developmental period. Other research interest have included cross-national comparisons of educational achievement, learning trajectories of children over time and poor schools which manage to perform above expectations.
